In the spotlight: Emmi Mikkilä

One of our June workshop week teachers is Emmi, and she’ll be teaching waacking! Read what she’s all about and sign up for the week.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Emmi and I’ll be teaching waacking, which is a social dance originated in the gay clubs of LA in the 70’s. It’s about the groove, arm rolls the waack, footwork, posing, acting and most importantly expressing yourself!

What made you want to start dancing?

I started dancing simply to express and enjoy myself and it has grown to be lifestyle through which I’ve learned many life lessions and about who I really am.

What or who inspires you? Why?

Music is always my biggest inspiration. If I don’t feel the music I don’t dance. Also people who dance freely as themselves inspire me the most these days. I appreciate the originality of each dance style always and I’ve spent countless hours of drilling techniques but it is the freedom that makes us dancers.

What makes your signature style?

My signature style is a lot about grooving with a feminine touch. My friend told me that waacking suits me perfectly as I act so dramatic in my dance. I also use a lot of footwork and floor in my dance.

Why should people attend your workshops?

I have so many things that I am just itching to share and help people to enjoy this style just as much as I do! We are going to have a super fun class where we not only learn the basis of the style but to express and share with each other.
